  1. I'm glad to hear that sandy. It could have been something more complicated. Thanks for letting us know.
  2. From what I read on this one probably not. However anytime I see the winlogon listed anywhere I would make a new Administrator account just to be safe. But from what I've read on the Mcafee site you shouldn't have any problems. Of course backing up is always a good idea whether you are infected or not.
  3. Hi Jags; Type msconfig in the run box. Click the startup tab. If there is a winlogon listed disable it and restart your computer. Follow the steps below and if need be run SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes in safe mode. Your computer appears to be infected with Malware. Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a combination of the words malicious and software. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. It is in your best interest to note the following: Please disable your resident security applications (such as AVG, Spybot, WinPatrol, etc.) before performing the below procedure so that they do not interfere with the process. Perform all the steps in the order listed to avoid any conflicts. If unsure, please stop and voice your doubts. You might be required to go offline during the disinfection process. Therefore, it is recommended to print off the instructions below for ease of reference. If you stick to the above guidelines, all should go smoothly. ================================================ STEP 1 Download ATF-Cleaner by Atribune. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click on the file to run the program. On the Main tab, check the Select All button. Next, click on the Firefox tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Firefox, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Now, click on the Opera tab (if applicable) and check the Select All button. Note: If you would like to preserve your saved passwords in Opera, then click No at the corresponding prompt. Press the Empty Selected button and click OK to acknowledge the corresponding prompt. Click on the Exit button to quit the program. ================================================ STEP 2 Please click here to download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Save the file to your Desktop. Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. At the end, make sure a check mark is placed next to: Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware [*]Click Finish. [*]The program will download and update itself if it finds the necessity to do so. Please allow this. [*]Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. Note: Depending on your computer specifications, the scan may take some time to complete. Please wait patiently and do not interrupt the process. [*]When the scan is complete, click OK, and then Show Results to view the results. [*]Make sure that every entry is selected, and click Remove Selected. [*]Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 3 Please click here to download SUPERAntiSpyware (Free Version). Save the file to your Desktop. Restart your computer. ================================================ STEP 5 Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and select System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen and click Next. Give the restore point a name then click Create. The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a note of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore. Next, click on Start > Run, type Cleanmgr and click on OK. Click on the More Options tab. Click the Clean Up button in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the most recent one. This will remove any infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in "System Restore" are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only foolproof way to ensure the deletion of those files. Note: Do not clear restore points on a regular basis as doing so will clear all previous restore points even those that you may need. System Restore is a useful tool to revert your computer back to a working condition if something goes wrong. Re-enable all your security applications and please return here and tell us how the computer seems to be operating. Close browsers before scanning Scan for tracking cookies Terminate memory threats before quarantining
  4. I feel your pain. There are many programs that I can no longer use or don't work as I would like since I went from Windows ME to Vista. Talk about a big change. Running in compatability mode works sometimes to a certain degree. Not to well though. At least for me. Many other options as suggested but no three click ones I'll bet. lol It is indeed sad when you purchase software to only find it obsolete within a few years. I wish you the best of luck.
  5. I've heard of it too aj but I profess to know little about it. I have no idea about the advantages, disadvantages or differences.. Does anyone know exactly what the situation is with the Windows Server?
  6. You are correct Cobra. It would indeed be most helpful to the member, the helpers and the staff if the poster would correctly identify the basic issue in the title. Perhaps some people will see this thread and do just that. Thankyou
  7. It appears to be the same in Vista Tootech.
  8. Hi Sandy try this. Right click your desktop. Click View. Click Show Desktop Icons. Does the option work ok on yours but not your friends?
  9. I thought only us old folk remembered Whack A Mole. (Whack A Mole predates computers) Very funny indeed.
  10. There is no need to be paranoid. Just keep your AV updated and use common sense on your surfing habits and research any software you install. When in doubt ask us first. I think you are good to go bud.
  11. No argument from me zinglebarb. As long as you are sure is my point. As you also said. Those restore points might come in handy. As i mentioned freeing up a little space on a large drive is not worth the risk of deleting restore points when Vista will fill it up very shortly anyway up to 15%. And trust me it will fill that 15% fast again. So my point is Vista will fill that space in days unless changed. Regular cleaning of other items will be long term. And the life line remains. Back to the topic. CCleaner will free up space but leave SR untouched which will fill up fast in Vista anyway. An image program is better but for the regular member save that in-built life line.
  12. This is true that System Restore can consume a lot of space especially in Vista. But clearing restore points might delete a life line in time of need. In Vista SR (shadow copy) it is set to use 15% of your free hard drive space by default. It will also make a new point every 24 hours by default. Vista needs this much space to do it so another option is to schedule it to do it less often so you can use the the same 15% but still go back farthur. You can also change the 15% figure to a a different one, that is lower, but you will have to do it by an elevated command prompt. But doing so will allow fewer restore points. My suggestion is to leave it alone. Vista SR needs more HD space but it is a life line. Besides 15% is minimal on any machine that has Vista as it should have a large drive. First do no harm. Leave that life line. Only remove that life line restore points when removing malware.
  13. That is good nikolay and I use it too. But the warnings given are valid. For instance I would never recommend the registry aspect of the program or any other reg program unless one is skilled on the registry. (Most reg programs are nothing more then snake oil poison) A backup reg file is a must but not enough. Freeing up more drive space can be done many ways including Windows itself. Of course the program has many uses and can simplify things once it's set right but novices should use caution as with any program. The bottom line is that it is an excellent program but please everyone who reads this thread do not use any program or it's features unless you are sure you know what you are doing. Sorry to interrupt everyone. Carry on.
  14. According to thier website: WebCoder 2009 works with any version of Windows from 98 to XP, Vista and Windows 7!
  15. Hi sawvern; Running two real time antivirus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. Always use just one. Running more then one anti-spyware programs is actually recommended. My AV has anti-spyware and I use Vistas built in Windows Defender (also available for XP) and I use Spyware Blaster. You might want to scan with SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just to double check that your machine is totally clean. And your quite welcome. We all try to help the best we can.
  16. Happy Birthday. Celebrate it with us Kane.
  17. I really have to wonder since you seem to have had problems with IE8 on 3 different computers. What is the common denominatar? Can you tell us a bit about all your computers that have had problems with IE8? Make. models and number to start with. What programs have you downloaded and installed on all three? Do you have your original install disks for these computers and what does it say on them?
  18. Hi Rick; I think what he means by branded is what is the make, model an number of your PC. For instance Compaq-Presario-5000. Or Dell-Dimension-xxxx
  19. Hi Cobra; So now you are using IE7 but seem to still have some IE8 features. Can you explain a little more about that please. Is there any chance you can do a System Restore to before you installed IE8? Maybe Microsofts kb article 957700 How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8? can help. Pay particular attention the the Alternative steps section.
  20. What is the program or application that you downloaded?
  21. Hi Ben. Nice to have you here. I think you'll like it.
  22. Hi oatmeal. We're glad to see you here.
  23. Hi zinglebarb; Where do you get that program and how much does it cost? Is it hard to use? Will it work on a non-bootable drive to retrieve data? I have to admit I've never heard of it so more information would be appreciated.
  24. Hi dieseldogrunner; We are all trying together to do just that. Good to see you here.
  25. unpro I might also ask if your computer is a laptop or desktop?
